Discover the ancient city of Angkor Thom: the town centred behind four kilometer long walls and whose five gates are crowned with the faces of the great kings, guardians of the East, Buddhist cosmology and also all the gods of the empire. The site is bounded on the east and the west by two giant reservoirs, the Baray, which stretch to the edge of the site: on one side the Baray of the East and on the other the baray of the West. A suggestion for “early risers”: leave before sunrise to watch the sun come up at Angkor Wat – an unforgettable moment at one of the wonders of the world, without crowds of tourists. Built, according to legend, by a celestial architect; Angkor Wat appeared at the beginning of the century bringing enchantment and dread to Westerners in an unknown world. Angkor Wat is the masterpiece of Suryarman II (1113-1150) who is often compared to Louis XIV for the splendor of his reign. This competent monarch found became ruler over all of southern Indochina and at the same time achieved spiritual harmony. Return to Samar Villas for a late “a la carte” breakfast.

Lunch & cruise on Lake Tonle Sap: Tonle Sap which translates as “great river of fresh water” or more frequently, simply as “great lake”, is a hydrological system combining both river and lake. The system is of paramount importance to Cambodia. The lake is the largest body of fresh water in SE Asia and UNESCO recognized its ecological importance in 1997. It is located not far from the site of Angkor Wat and is linked by its river to the River Mekong and so to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. You take a deluxe picnic lunch on-board your boat prepared by the chefs at The Samar. On your return to the hotel, a masseuse is at your service for:

  • A hand massage
  • Herbal reflexology & leg massage
  • Manicure & pedicure
  • Dinner is at Tchoui Restaurant – well away from the tourist trails with an authentic Khmer ambiance.
  • A “Khmer mojito” as an aperitif, a choice of starters. Got the main course, a choice of charcoal grilled fillet of beef marinated in herbs or fish in a salt crust. Tropical fruit platter.

  • “A la carte” American Breakfast

Leave in a private vehicle for Bantaeay Srei – a marvelously preserved temple from the 10th century which some say is more beautiful than Angkor (one hour drive from the hotel). Bantaeay Srei is a sculptural jewel carved from sandstone that changes colour with the suns passage through the day. Many well-preserved pavilions with finely sculpted walls picturing scenes from Hindu mythology. The architect Maurice Glaise considered Bantaeray Srei to be “the most beautiful Khmer temple” and it is also famous for the theft of an 800kg lintel by Andre Malraux. Sometimes called the “citadel of women”, it is completely covered with surprisingly perfect reliefs. The lintels and doorways are magnificently detailed. You continue on by road to Kobal Spein, the river of a thousand “linga” before returning to The Samar for a light lunch by the side of the pool. A free afternoon to discover the rage of treatments and massages available in the Samar Spa. Dinner at Wat Damnak Restaurant where the owners, Johannes & Caroline offer an excellent choice of local recipes prepared with the finest local produce and served in a high quality setting.
